So much for snuggling under the duvet with my hot chocolate...

Rocket has far too much energy to sit quietly for long…. He has taken to chewing everything he can get his paws on! That seems to include my favourite leather couch, kreepy krawly and lemon tree! So, with Rocket’s chewing in mind, I decided that it was time to invest in some toys for him. I am hoping that this will keep him busy and my home intact!

What I have found is that toys come in many shapes, sizes and textures. Your choice of toy for your pet will depend on its age and breed. Most puppies tend to enjoy chew toys, while others like to carry toys in their mouths or have their toys thrown for them to retrieve.

Petstages toys are thoughtfully designed to meet these needs. Their dog range includes the chewing and Orka (even more chewing) range, fitness and interacting range as well as playing and soothing ranges.

Here are some advantages of chew toys:

  • Chew toys help to shed baby teeth and straighten permanent teeth
  • Puppies learn appropriate chewing behavior. They learn what is ‘theirs’ to chew as opposed to chewing your rose bushes
  • Chew toys offer a distraction when the family is eating or watching TV. This might be appreciated when you are trying to watch Isidingo
  • Chew toys can be used to stop the dog from licking or chewing itself
  • Chew toys offer a sense of enjoyment and well being

Tips for managing toys:

  • Have a selection of toys with different textures and shapes
  • Start on softer chew toys and progress to stronger toys as your puppy’s jaws strengthen
  • Beware of toys that are very hard as determined chewers may break their teeth or damage their jaw
  • Rotate toys frequently. Have a range of toys and only offer your dog a few to play with at a time whilst keeping the rest packed out of their reach. We recommend a Good Dog Toy Box for storing your pet toys
  • Take toys away when you are at home and give them back when you leave. This will encourage interest in the toys when they are given. It will also help when your pet is alone at home during the day
  • Check toys regularly for sharp edges and fine threads that may damage gums and teeth
  • Choose toys that are suitable for the size of your dog. Avoid small toys that can be swallowed whole - especially if you have a large breed dog. You will be amazed at what has had to be removed from dogs’ stomachs
  • Toys can be washed in warm water and dishwashing liquid
  • Make sure that you purchase toys made from non-toxic materials

If that doesn’t stop your pet from eating your favourite leather couch or the lemon tree, you could try Kyron’s Footsack spray or Stay Off!. I think the names of these products speak for themselves!

But toys aren’t only for dogs! We’ll give you more information about cat and bird toys in one of our future newsletters. In the meantime, click here to see our range of cat toys and bird toys.

Keep warm, until next time!
